the underdogg is the title of dj tre’s debut ep for hyperdub. he had two brilliant tracks featured on our dj rashad tribute compilation next life, but compared to other longterm members of the teklife footwork crew, he hasn’t released much, so we’re very happy to bring him out to play again here. tre has been about since the early days, born and raised on the south side of chicago. encouraged by the late dj rashad and his partner dj spinn, he has been making tracks since 1999, over a decade before footwork’s ascent to global popularity. on this ep his sound, for the most part is rooted in the speedy 4/4 of juke. it features a sparse and minimalist take on footwork but he’s got a knack of adding in tight little switches and details that keep the tracks moving as essential dance floor weapons.

the shadow city crew are at it again. release number 3, from the birmingham based collective’s vinyl only imprint, shows that previous accomplished outings were no flash in the pan. harry parsons returns with three quality cuts designed to get you up and keep you moving.

clergy returns for its 9th instalment with a club ready ep of serious weapons from label mainstay, and one half of works unit, reflec. the four track release opens with acid response , in which reflec has combined a tough rhythm section with a growling 303 to create a high energy roller guaranteed to keep the dance floor moving. continuing on this trend of heavy hitting rollers, osmosis is a drum track through and through, which incorporates dark and sweeping atmospherics into the groove true to reflec’s form.

code 718 aka iconic nyc dj danny tenaglia dropped this e2-e4 riffing classic back in the mists of 1992. manuel göttsching s original track would have been a staple of nyc clubs back then and would have featured in the warm up sets of jocks like tenaglia who favoured the longer, deeper sets as well as on the play-lists of institutional night-spots such as the loft and the garage. the track s influence on a whole era of dj s and producers that followed is immeasurable and across 3 sublime mixes tenaglia distills the magic of the original into something totally nyc and club-friendly without losing any of the göttsching magic, even managing to sprinkle a little grace jones in the mix with her fabulous i floated on a cloud vocal sample liberally applied. equinox takes us on a trip that is emotive, uplifting and warm. this is how house music is meant to sound, respectfully steeped in what preceded it yet moving forward in a fresh direction. another example of how on the money strictly rhythm were in their early days, classic after classic rolled out of the labels offices and us, the record buying legions, were / are better off for it! this one s a tasty 2017 reissue and remaster, featuring all 3 mixes, unedited, as per the original release way back when. do not sleep.

tidy line-up including randomer, gilbr, voiski and tolouse low trax. tip! in terms of experimental, techno, very few come close to the impact that this uk producer has had on the scene. with a sound that is rarely classifiable, randomer’s dekmantel contribution is a staggered, minimally-twisted, dark, kind-of-two step, awesome thing. versatile records’ gilb’r has found himself an integral part of the dutch scene since moving to amsterdam, and brings forth his organic, percussive grooves that have helped define his music, and label to date. salon des amateurs’ tolouse low trax provides a seasoned session of amniotic, grizzled, hypnotic post-everything music, that is eerily discomforting and wonderfully pleasurable at the same time. and on the ep’s fourth track, parisian techno wizard, voiski adds layered organic, futuristic loops that work to stale the progress of time, and space.

next up on bucharest’s raw tools label is börft co-founder, johan sturesson, also known to be part of the swedish electronic trio, frak. the four-track ep consists in music from the private vaults of the producer, that has been kept secret for almost 20 years. rough and gritty, his analogue approach and stripped down sound define the record. starting with the rave sounding “uncle owl” and then moving to a more darkly atmospheric title track, kord shows his muscles on the flipside with some more techno infused and bass driven dancefloor cuts.
always under the radar, johan has been operating raw electronics since the late 80’s, developing his distinctive sound. as kord, he has released on several swedish labels, including his own imprint. together with jan svensson and björn isgren as frak, they have released music on labels such as kontra musik, lux rec and midlight records.

with lukas lehmann, a new face joins the footjob-squad. out of his estimated 7.436 unfinished projects, he managed to complete three tracks, bag a remix and bundle it all up to what will hit the stores as this is why ep. the a-side kicks off with the discoish banger q&h and a beautiful synth-heavy remix by lorenz rhode not only famous for his releases on compost records or exploited but also for taking detroit-swindle-liveshows to another level with his godlike keys-skills. the deeper side of lukas’ sound is represented on the b-side. starting with edgy piano chords, solid/fragile (coexistence) introduces an enchanting arpeggio midway through the track. with its distinctive strings, nothing but a heartache makes for a semi-sentimental yet still hips-moving finisher.

dutch dj, producer and dekmantel family member young marco kicks things off with a beautiful, melodic, waterfall of a track. it’s a record you’ll want to play out on a yacht, while sipping on a rosé under the warm, afternoon sun. 2017 has been nothing short of an epic year for marco, having already compiled the second in the selectors compilation series for dekmantel, in addition to having released the second lp as gaussian curve, alongside gigi masin, and johnny nash. marco is in good company, as dutch-based artist suzanne kraft crafts a delightful, ambient-meets-house, summer groove, that lives at the most relaxed of paces, sitting side-by-side on the a-side. flip the record over and dekmantel favourite, and dutch house institute tom trago finds himself in a moment of blissful summer haze, with soft, sonic-pallets and waving melodies. concluding the record is long serving dekmantel mainstay, and rednose distrikt main-man awanto 3 with an analogue, and feel-good, electro-beat rhythm.

nick the record is one of the uk s most respected record dealers as well as a highly gifted dj of the underground disco, afro, soul, funk and house scene since the early 90s. for those who don t know he was 1/2 of soul ascendants that released some serious fela inspired house on nuphonic records in the late 90 s. he s currently enjoying a well deserved hype due to his heavy compilations on z records and various remixes. for his first release on gamm he goes all disco with two big reworks that are sure to get the heads moving. lifeforce theme is a tribute to the japan collective where he was resident dj for over 20 years. recordnition is a heavy percussion n philly disco burner that got that deep nyc disco feel all over it. nick definitely got the records.

after moving from london to berlin cromby is back on tenderpark with his second ep for the vinyl label. the young man recreates our love for deep house with two sample-based tracks which showcase his ever advancing skills with the old school akai sampler mpc 2000 xl as well as his cool understanding of mixing haunting melodies with gripping groove patterns. the remix on the flip side comes from hip-hop super producer gone house lover hodini who has collaborated with the talented bass player chez kerim for this funky workout. the cover image shot by achim valbracht is the start of a new artwork series developed by tenderpark art director till sperrle which revolves around critique of investor-driven architechture that has been dominating berlin for several decades now. the speciously precious and glittering image displays a normalised and globally standardised kind of beauty but at the same time reveals a strong sense of loneliness. as always both the mastering and as well as the lacquer cut of this record have been carefully executed by vinyl sound mastermind helmut erler at dubplates & mastering.

as the summer closes and the autumn arrives the project releases its next selection with label boss frazer campbell and dark arts techno head stu crosbie. not a stranger to the label having appeared on the previous release stuart once again delivers his unique filtered sound of stripped back minimal techno with hints of trippy yet groovy influences of dark back room excursions. a real master of simplicity but exact definition of sombre sounds. the flip side presents a very different sonic description by frazer. ‘bleeding gums’ holds broken beat kicks with rolling drums but as always carries a true sense of emotion and warmth. the ep closes with ‘deebling mugs’ which is a production full of drive, dirty basslines and groove that will keep any dance floor moving as we wave goodbye to the summer of 2017.

steffi occupies a unique space in the realm of contemporary electronic music. although she s a world renowned dj, steffi s musical interests reach far beyond the dancefloor, and it s her work as a producer that has established an impressive, hard-won legacy. soon after moving to berlin in 2007, steffi joined ostgut, becoming a resident at panorama bar and releasing on the club s label. to date she s released five albums, including two solo for ostgut ton, a co-production with virginia, another with analogue cops as third side and a collaboration as doms & deykers on martyn s 3024 label. her impressive discography features club classics like “ yours feat. virginia” , carefully chosen remixes and appearances on labels including permanent vacation, underground quality and mixes for panorama bar and fabric. she owns and operates four labels: klakson (with dexter), dolly, dolly deluxe and dolly dubs. world of the waking state is steffi s third solo album for ostgut ton and a musical departure for both her and the label. it s also a serious statement of intent. over ten tracks she embarks on entirely new electronic terrain for her productions, marking industrial spaces with superlunary warmth while exercising a refined knowledge of polyphony and arrangement. subdued melodies interact with each other over implied harmonies and microcosmic drum patterns, luring us into a world that is introverted, bewildering and gratifying all at once.

total science are back to grace their own imprint cia records, and this time they enlist the musical and technical prowess of fellow bristol associates hydro and war alongside themselves on the reign ep. made up of four killer slabs of fast paced, moving and deep drum & bass, the influence of each party is immediately obvious in each track. total science are infamous for their breaks and rave influences that have often been present in their music since they first started releasing in the early 1990’s. hydro has been releasing music since 2007, working with a slew of respected producers such as break, dlr, fd and halogenix amongst many others. he is infamous for his epic sample collection and the deep and deadly vibe that he brings to tracks. and the young french extraordinaire war has already shown he is a force to be reckoned with, consistently releasing music with a sublime depth and musicality that belies his age – and also a power and punch that consistently rips clubs to shreds. the reign ep brings the finest attributes of each of the parties to the table, and results in a well-rounded collection of music that offers something to a wide range of listeners. whether you want to lock them into a groove, tear the roof off the club, or get them thinking about what will come next in this world, the reign ep has it in spades.

it had been four years since juxtaposition, radians last record. chimeric is not a polished album. within the context it is raw, broken, even dark sometimes. steady, multiple rhythms, layered on top of each other disappear into chaos and turn back into discreet structures in the next moment. references of rock music, executed with the precision of a sequencer, mutated, restructured. a lot on this album is about control and the loss of control. the risk of failure. but chimeric is much more free. some of the longer pieces are composed of very different parts and different colours along a continuous timeline. they tend to evolve in a narrative form and are moving through various scenes and surroundings, which is also present in the spacial relationship between the instruments.

reissue of the highly sought after nigerian funk-rock album, moving effortlessly between reggae, jazzy afrobeat and psych rock. soundway fans first got a taste of jay-u’s infectious beats with the track ‘some more’, featured on the soundway compilation “nigeria disco funk special: the sound of the underground lagos dancefloor 1974-79”. originally released by emi nigeria in 1977, this now-rare album was written by jay-u and engineered by disco-boogie artist goddy oku. opening with the up-tempo reggae number “reggae deluxe”, the album descends into mind-blowing jazz-funk featuring several killer saxophone solos. the journey ends with a trip into psych-prog rock, with a sound not dissimilar to that coming out of the early 70s british rock scene.
